We had company coming over and the house was a mess, so naturally, I spent the week removing 4000000 years of paint layers off of my front steps. If you are nodding in agreement, then you are my people. Read on.

Painted wood tends to make me feel just a little curious and well, if I'm honest a little sad. These steps were painted several times between the time we moved in, stretching back in all liklihood to ...I'm gonna say....the mosaic era. There was red, there was cream, there was a sort of blue, which actually endeared me to that previous owner (if for nothing other than the risk of painting anything this particular blue). I started with a scrapa (pronounce with thick Boston accent) and ended with a heat gun. It was rough stuff. Couple of things I learned:

  1. If you use chemical stripper, don't probs use a heat gun.

  2. Make lots of money and hire someone.

That said, I do prefer them sans paint. The most useful tool in the end was this little hybrid number, which I will post a pic of. THis sander from Porter Cable was awesome. powerful and also manageable...and also not crazy expensive. My family has finally realized thta I prefer tools over jewelry, so this baby is mine and I highly recommend.
